Evie, A journey of discovery of facts and also a journey of discovery of self. You did a brave thing which had some setbacks but came out on the other side it appears stronger and fulfilled. I admire your will to go and do this. Brava, brava, brava!

I’ve never wanted to go to Germany. But you have made it intriguing. Dana traveled in Europe for a month after college and her favorite place was Berlin. My aunt’s parents escaped on the last boat out of Holland in 1938 or 39. Her father only convinced her mother to travel by telling her that they were taking a business trip to America. Of course he knew they would never return. Both of their families perished at the hands of the Nazis. I remember seeing a scrapbook of theirs of Berlin. With the streets lined with Nazi flags. In New York they had 2 children. A girl born in 1940, my aunt, Beatrice Winkler Bayer who is married to my Uncle Mitchell, my mother’s only surviving sibling, and her brother, born in 1945, Henry Franklin Winkler, who became famous for playing the Fonz in Happy Days.
