I”m so happy for Mindi and your family. And yes, the news was dire when we were graduating, too. I got my B.A. in the spring of 1970, right after the Kent State shootings. I’ve subsequently been on that campus and seen the bullet holes in a metal sculpture, deliberately left unfixed. Not to mention the assassinations of JFK, RFK, and MLK. I would offer every new grad the Talmudic saying about making the world a better place: “It is not given to us to complete the task, but neither are we allowed to desist from it.” Onward and upward!
