“Most people are basically good hearted.” This worldview is echo’d by Rebecca Solnit in her book A Paradise Built in Hell. The “Hells” explored in the book are various natural and man-made disasters that have afflicted the U.S. over the last hundred years or so, from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake to Hurricane Katrina. The “Paradises” comprise the informal groupings of survivors who banded together to help each other. Many testify to an unexpected feeling of joy that came from helping strangers. Not everyone behaved well, of course–but as Solnit shows, those who behaved the worst tended to be people in power who did not believe that “most people are basically good hearted,” instead convinced that military force was needed to control the situation and doing much additional harm in the process.
