Thanks, Pat. Yes, quite the treasure trove, discovering this correspondence. I guess some of my journalistic tendencies come from my grandfather, who was a great chronicler of this period of his life.

You are blessed to have this much information about your family. I hope to try to find out more about mine when I have time–read, after I retire–but I know it will be difficult, since they were mostly uneducated farmers with shallow roots in the US. Tracing the connections in Germany and Ireland might be almost impossible. But indeed, it is fascinating to find out what one can.
