Hi Evelyn, What a treat to read your blog tonight! I think you represent in your comments the truest meaning of what sport can be to a group of fans. Modern living affords few opportunities for feeling united with our neighbors today, and even baseball, which once was the focus of all Americans in the summer, now competes with thousands of other distractions.

Your obvious affection for the game mirrors your obvious love of life and all it’s imperfections. Siding with the home team provides a release that eludes most everyday activities. One of my favorite World Series memories was walking down a city residential street in St. Louis during a game in ’82, and hearing an unbroken call of the game coming from every porch and window along the way. Briefly, we felt together in something, and win or lose, that was the important thing.

Even though the Sox are a better team than the Cards this year, I’ve still enjoyed the contest, and your blog just made it better.

Loved this post, Ev–especially well written, and I am not even a baseball fan! But David and I happened to be on the road late Sunday night, returning from Providence airport after our week-end trip, and we got the game on the radio. Had to struggle to hear it but it was so exciting–I think experiencing the game that way is even more intense than watching. That last out pick-off was amazing! Go Sox!
