Of course I do not know how to explain these phantom sensations. However, studying kabbalah, I was told that every person has an aura that extends out from them at least a few inches. My instructor claimed to be able to see them and their different colors, which indicate spiritual states, and while listening to him, I imagined that I could actually get a glimpse of his. Without the discipline to reliably see auras, I can testify that I have experienced sensations that are not accountable by literal touch. How is it, for example, that we all seem to know when someone is looking at us very hard, even if there is no way we could have seen where that person's gaze was directed before it "touched" us? Also, sitting near a person, I feel as if I can "feel" the person's presence without touching. I've also heard that blind people can "feel" their way around by sensing the presence of objects before they touch them. My kabbalah instructor actually addressed this phenomenon: he claimed that every living thing has a aura (so a sensitive blind person would not bump into a tree) and so do inanimate objects if they have been in long contact with living things (like my sofa!).
