In reply to Patricia Osten. Thanks for this, Patricia, and for the good wishes. I do hope your friend's granddaughter reconsiders! The Catch-22 is that if you don't really know what it was like before vaccines, there's a dangerous sense of false security.

Those of us who grew up in a time when most of today’s vaccines were not developed understand that the risks of not vaccinating are way worse than any perceived risks from administrating these preventative serums. As an early boomer I remember the panics when the polio virus would sweep through cities causing local officials to close city swimming pools, cancel all sporting activities and even things like Scout camps and vacation Bible schools. Children and adults sickened and died including people in our city. The availability of the polio virus was looked on as a miracle and I recall my pediatrician having a clinic on a Saturday in order to administer the vaccine.
Recently one of my friends told me that her 23 year old vegan granddaughter with two children under 3 had decided not to vaccinate with the normally scheduled vaccines. My friend’s reaction was the same as mine – NO!!!!! She later told me that her granddaughter was “reconsidering” her choice. Fingers crossed, she will.

Very sensible, couldn’t agree more. I hope this post does not attract the ire of the anti-vaxers. I am pro-vaccine. I hope people remember that very young babies can’t be protected against flu and other diseases because they are too young to get the existing vaccines. People may feel that they are strong enough to do without the flu vaccine, but even if true, they could spread it to the more vulnerable.
