Yes, indeed. The process of creating art, whatever form, whatever medium, enables us to express our unique experience of the world and connect. Seeing de Kooning’s incredible work the second time around, after reading his biography, really gave me a sense of his intense struggle and how he conveyed it through his painting. I have a patient who is limited cognitively, very young, but he is one of the most talented artists I have ever personally known, a true idiot savant. I asked him to make a birthday card for a friend whose birthday is this friday and he did. I hope she likes it, I know she will appreciate it. Just some floral sketches but flowing from somewhere within him. And the pleasure he gets out of creating beautiful art sketches means so much to him, and those who he shares it with. Whatever limitations people may have, creativity gives them life.
