Agreed that we will have this virus in our lives from now on. Annual Covid vaccinations will be as normal as annual flu shots. I suspect, once the majority of Americans are vaccinated, life will start looking more like it does now in Israel, which is leading the world in national vaccinations, and has a vaccination "passport" app on phones to get into restaurants, concerts, et al. The bigger issue, once we figure out post-vax rules for public spaces, will be the ethics of risks when vaccines are still optional, and those who choose not to get the vaccine will still potentially endanger the lives of those at higher risk to whatever new variants come along. We live with this now, with the H1N1 flu, but just don't talk about it.

Among people who want to stay safe from the virus (lamentably, that is not everyone), I find that there is a range of do's and don't's as people set their own levels of caution. I think it has to be that way, since people's circumstances differ. We've seen very little of my husband's large and close family over the past year--not at all normal for this congenial group--and then, only outdoors. But the exception is his sister, alone in the world and recently moved to our town. I can't let her sit by herself all the time, so we have hosted her in our home for what we hope have been relatively safe meals. My dining room table is very long!
At the same time, I think it's important to realize that COVID-19 is never going away. Even if it does not morph into a more deadly strain, please G-D, it will probably join the cluster of viruses that afflict the human population every season, for which there is a variably effective seasonal vaccine. Some COVID-19 precautions should probably stay in place for the foreseeable future. Not an air travel ban, or so I hope, with a daughter and grandson overseas, but maybe face masks and more distanced seating in restaurants, cultural venues, etc. instead of packing us in as usual. Observing precautions, I have, ironically, enjoyed the healthiest year in 2020 that I've had for a long time.
